Acupuncture is part of a 5000 year old system that treats the whole person (body, mind, and spirit). It involves the insertion of fine needles on the body, along a network of pathways called meridians. The needles used during an acupuncture session are very thin and flexible, resulting in minimal to no pain. In our practice, although we mainly utilize 8-principle acupuncture, we also use other styles like 5-element and Japanese style.
After the needles are inserted, you may experience tingling, warming, or heavy sensations. This is completely normal and should not be mistaken for pain. Patients will lie on a comfortable table during which needles are retained for 20-30 minutes.
Electrical Stimulation (E-STIM)
Gentle electrical, micro-currents are sent through the needles to open energy pathways in the body. This is done through an E-STIM machine, and it is used to relieve pain or enhance treatment for particular circumstances.
Acupressure and Tui Na Massage
Tui Na is a therapeutic Chinese Bodywork Therapy used and developed in China for the past several thousand years. It uses traditional Chinese medical theory of the qi flow throughout the meridians as the basis of diagnosis. The purpose of Tui Na is to promote the smooth flow of qi throughout the body; therefore allowing the body to heal itself. It can provide many of the benefits of acupuncture, without the needles.
Moxibustion uses warming herbs on acupuncture points to promote circulation and relax muscle spasms. This is done with a heated moxibustion stick, and it is performed safely and carefully to relieve certain acute muscle pains.
Cupping is the use of glass or plastic suction cups to relax and stretch tight muscles. Commonly seen to treat back pain, cupping can also be used to treat other types of pain. Cupping can open up areas of congestion, by drawing out toxins and pathogens from the body.
